The torrija or torreja … is a sweet included in Lenten and Holy Week celebrations in Spain, Central America (including Nicaragua) and some regions of Argentina, Mexico and Uruguay.

Ingredients of torrijas or torrejas
- 1 taza 1/2 de leche tibia
- 3 cucharaditas de azucar
- 2 huevos
- 6 piezas de pan de 2 cm de grosor
- Aceite
- Azúcar
- Canela en polvo
Preparation: How are Torrejas made?
- To the milk we add the 3 spoonfuls of sugar, we mix it.
- To the eggs we beat them so that they mix and integrate among themselves.
- We take one of the pieces of bread and first we pass it through the milk and then through the beaten egg, we repeat the process with the other pieces of bread.
- Then we light our kitchen, we put oil, once the oil is boiling proceed to add one by one our breads bathed in milk and egg, so that we are browned on both sides.
- Let them cook for at least 2 or 3 minutes until they are golden brown.
- When they are ready, drain the oil with a spoon. And we put them on absorbent paper to remove all the excess fat from the oil.
- Then cool the torrijas, once ready…
- With clean hands, in a dish mix brown sugar with cinnamon powder.
- Once ready, we bathe our torrijas on both sides until they look delicious. How much do we have to throw in? That to the liking of each one, go tasting until you are calm with the flavor.
- Optional we can bathe them with honey and to enjoy it has been said.
